Today we are giving our default model a name: Arka Helix 1.
For the first six months of Arka's life, the model was simply called “Arka Standard.” It worked. But the name told you nothing about what was actually doing the thinking when you asked Arka a question. Helix 1 is the answer to that question — an honest one.
What Arka Helix 1 actually is
Helix 1 is a wrapper model. That is a precise term, not a marketing one. It means Helix 1 is not a new set of model weights we trained from scratch. It is a careful composition of three things:
- A high-quality open-weights inference layer running on NVIDIA's hosted infrastructure
- Arka's adaptive system prompt, which encodes our personality, our safety stance, and the user's preferences
- A memory and style overlay that personalises every response without leaking private context across users
Wrap those three layers around any decent foundation model, and what comes back feels like Arka, not like a generic chatbot. That is the entire trick.
Why we are not training our own foundation model
The boring secret of shipping useful AI products in 2026 is that you almost never need to train the foundation. Training is expensive, slow, and a research problem. The product problem — making intelligence feel personal, helpful, and safe for a specific group of users — lives in the wrapper.
By being a wrapper, Helix 1 gets the benefit of every improvement the foundation model makes, without us spending a year on a training run. We focus our engineering on the parts that actually decide whether Arka is good to use: tone, memory, response shape, error handling, and the surface around the conversation. Read more about this philosophy in our piece on why Arka is a wrapper and proud of it.
What is on the Helix roadmap
Helix 1 is just the starting point. The roadmap looks like this:
- Helix 1 Adaptive — the existing Adaptive Thinking mode promoted to a first-class model variant in the dropdown
- Helix 1 Vision — better image grounding for the analysis path
- Helix 2 — a faster, cheaper variant for everyday questions, paired with Helix 1 as the reasoning fallback
You will not have to choose between them. Arka will route automatically, the same way Adaptive Thinking already does. Helix 1 stays the default everywhere.
