Childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes in India
The pediatric Type 2 epidemic that did not exist a generation ago. Urbanisation, screen time, and school food environments as drivers.
Type 2 diabetes in children was almost unknown in India a generation ago. Today, pediatric Type 2 cases are rising fast in urban centres.
Drivers
- Increased screen time, decreased outdoor play
- Highly processed school snacks and easy access to sugary drinks
- Family meal patterns shifting toward eating out
- Sleep deprivation from late screen use
Why it matters
Earlier diabetes onset means longer cumulative exposure to high blood sugar. Cardiovascular and renal complications appear earlier and more severely.
Prevention
School-level food and activity policy is the biggest lever. At the family level: consistent meal times, screen limits, regular outdoor activity, sugary-drink elimination.
