Exercise and diabetes — the cheapest medicine

Why moving matters, and how much is enough.

No medicine for diabetes is more effective than movement. Most people are surprised by how little is needed.

Thirty minutes a day, five days a week, of moderate activity is the consistently-studied minimum that lowers HbA1c by roughly 0.6-0.7%. That is comparable to many drugs.

What "moderate" means

You should be able to talk in full sentences but not sing. Examples:

  • Brisk walking (3-4 km in 30 minutes)
  • Cycling on flat ground
  • Swimming at a steady pace
  • Vigorous gardening or house cleaning
  • Dancing
  • Beginner yoga (Surya Namaskar counts)

The post-meal walk hack

Walking 10-15 minutes after lunch and dinner can lower post-meal blood sugar by 20-30 mg/dL. The muscles literally pull glucose out of the blood to burn for fuel. It is the highest-leverage habit in diabetes management. Free. No equipment. Works immediately.

What to be careful about

On insulin or sulfonylureas? Exercise can drop your sugar fast. Carry glucose tabs or a sweet. Test before and after if possible. Avoid exercise when sugar is very high (over 250 mg/dL with ketones) — rest and hydrate first.
